Tritton Gears of War 3 Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound

Tritton, a company of the hardware accessories manufacturer Mad Catz, has developed a gaming headset for Gears of War fans especially for the release of Gears of War 3. The Tritton Gears of War 3 Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound Headset not only spoils gamers with a limited design in red and black, but also with 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound, which is intended to make it easier to locate opponents. Very impressively packaged, the headset from Tritton hides itself from the hands of the Gears of War hardcore gamers. Although such branded headsets are not always well done, the Tritton Gears of War 3 Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound Headset can still convince at first glance in terms of design.

Tritton has chosen the colours red and black for this headset. The frame of the headset has a dark piano lacquer look with a matt Gears-of-War logo on the head side. A piece of foam with a rubber cover, which was only glued on, provides the necessary wearing comfort. How long the foam lasts, cannot be said at first sight. The grey and white Tritton logo can be found on both sides of the auricle joints. The Gears-of-War skull logo, which is on both auricles, attracts all eyes. The clou: behind the bezel there are four LEDs, so that the artwork lights up pulsating in the colour red. This looks cool, at least when you’re being watched while playing, because the player himself can’t see the design. Both ear cups are generously padded and enclose both ears without any problems. Tritton has also thought about the cable, and thanks to the red color it fits very well with the gaming headset. All in all, the headset convinces in terms of design all along the line.

Scope of delivery & installation

Although the Tritton Gears of War 3 Dolby 7.1 surround sound headset was designed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 owners can breathe a sigh of relief, the headset can also be connected to the console from Sony. The installation is generally very simple. Included in the package is a user guide and a Quick Start Guide that explains the procedure with the help of easy-to-understand graphics. Unfortunately, the individual cables were not labeled on the graphics, so that there could be a small mix-up. Also included is of course the headset with an approximately 5 meter long cable, the removable and flexible microphone, the decoder box including stand, the Xbox-Live communication cable, a USB and optical cable, a digital audio and PC adapter and last but not least additional ear pads and a headband padding, should the old ones wear out too much. For connecting the headset the gamer has three variants: The classic connection via HDMI for the Xbox 360, where the decoder box is connected to the console via the digital audio adapter and via USB cable. For other devices, the USB and optical cable can be connected to the hardware, but you will also need a VGA adapter, which is not included in the scope of delivery. The PC adapter also allows you to connect the headset to a computer.

Wearing comfort & sound quality

Thanks to its generous padding, the headset is very comfortable to wear. The solid headphones do not disturb even after several hours. The ear cups completely enclose the ears, which means there is no pressure on the ears and ambient noise is not generated. Unfortunately, the headset does not sit very firmly on the head; Tritton could have made some improvements here. Tirtton has not spared in terms of workmanship, both the ear cups and the headband are very well made. The Dolby 7.1 surround sound of the gaming headset can really be heard. The basses are very deep and make every shooter a joy to listen to. The headset can also convince in the warm midrange as well as in the differentiated highs. However, some sound nuances are swallowed by the very deep and powerful sound. Thanks to the Dolby Digital modes “Film” and “Music”, the headset is also suitable for listening to music and watching films. The detachable microphone also didn’t allow itself to slip up in the test. The voice transmission is good and the headset is very flexible. Practically it can be removed at any time, so that the headset can also be stowed away easily.

The Tritton Gears of War 3 Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound Headset can convince with its high quality sound and good workmanship. It is definitely not just a headset for Gears of War fans.
