Razer Chimaera Wireless 5.1 Surround
The Californian computer accessories manufacturer Razer is well known among gamers for its high-quality mice and mouse pads. The US-American company has also been offering gaming headsets for some time now. The Chimaera stereo headset was released some time ago, now there is the Razer Chimaera 5.1 Wireless Gaming Headset with 5.1 sound.
Design & Comfort
Razer has opted for the elegant black for the colour selection. Fortunately, it is mainly a matte color that is nice to touch. On the sides, however, high gloss material is used. At first glance, the headset looks relatively large, but it is still very comfortable to wear. On the sides of the ear cups, Razer has barely noticeable and very discreetly displayed its logos. Very pleasing is the removal of the ear pads, whereby the drivers are far away from the ears and thus provide good sound. The auricles are generally very large and surround the ears perfectly, but the pressure is still enough so that there is no large external noise. Thanks to the double padding in the headband, the Chimaera offers first-class comfort while not pressing too hard on the head. The padding is unfortunately all made of fabric and not artificial leather.
Connections & Operation
As a wireless headset, the Razer Chimaera consists of two parts: the headset and a stand, which is also the central unit and charging station. The controls are all located on the earcups. On the left is a power on/off switch and the mute button. On the right side are the Mode and Sync buttons. The Mode button can be used to toggle through different chat modes, e.g. to switch to XBL chat, while the Sync button is used to match the headset to the base station. In the back of the earcups are the volume controls, on the right for the earphones and on the left for the microphone. The switching elements are all well placed and can be reached easily.
The central unit has three switches on the front panel: Power on/off, EQ Mody and Dolby on/off and sync / Source. Razer provides three EQ modes for the Chimaera 5.1 wireless headset. The LED indicator provides additional information about the headset, such as the battery status and which modes are set. Thanks to RCA and 3.5 mm Aux in and out as well as one Opt in/out connection each, the Chimaera Gaming Headset can not only be used with the PC and the Xbox 360, but also with almost any device. For the connection to the Xbox 360 a 2.5 mm jack cable is included.
The sound of the Chimaera from Razer is convincing all along the line. The bass is a bit more balanced than desired in some situations, but it doesn’t disturb. When gaming on the Xbox 360, both sound and speech are transmitted and received well. The headset also achieves a good rating in terms of movies and music. On the other hand, there were small problems with voice transmission on the PC. It needs a proper fine-tuning to achieve good results. One problem seems to be the 5.8 GHz frequency band. Of course, interference with a wireless headset can never be ruled out, but in general, the Razer Chimaera is convincing. The range of about 8 meters is particularly pleasing.
Razer sets the bar noticeably higher with its Chimaera Wireless Gaming Headset for Xbox 360 headsets. The headset convinces with its range, excellent sound and good workmanship.
